The Great Divide

PUEBLO, Colo.--So my favorite story happened in Colorado. I flew there in September as part of a strike team to get the numbers up in Pueblo. After about three days of the local Census office having screw up after screw up and not having us do proper work, we were off.

So I go to a few houses in the morning with the usual hit or miss situations. But then, I get to a house and knock on the door. This older woman answers and asks what I'm doing there. I tell her I'm with the Census. She at first says she isn't interested so I go to walk away and she starts going off on me about how Trump is trying to use the census to find illegals and to track Democrats and all this other crazy stuff. I explain to her that the actual questions are simple and straightforward and we don't ask about citizenship or political affiliation, and she doubles down.

She calls me a Trump lackey (fuck that guy) and THEN, I tell her she can answer it online and start to walk away and she claims I won't leave her alone, as I'm walking away! So anyway, I'm like whatever, she obviously seems just crazy and has decided to pick a team to play ball for...so I go to my next house, literally a quarter-mile away, and as I'm walking up I see veteran signs everywhere so I'm like, Hey he'll appreciate me since we both worked for the Federales.

So I knock and he pushes the door open real hard to try to hit me, so I walk back and step off the porch. He comes out, strapping his gun to his side, and asks me what I'm there for (btw, I have a shoulder bag and neck ID that clearly say Census so he knows why I'm there). I go through my shpiel and he tells me to leave. He claims I'm part of the deep-state and I'm a Democrat plant and there to take info on the political affiliation for tracking and literally ALL THE SAME CRAZY SHIT THE OTHER LADY SAID. I struggled not to laugh because he WAS MAD. But it was wild. Like, they both clearly hated the Census and Federal Government in a weird spy vs. spy situation.

So that made me realize how far separated Americans can be, yet how they're both so narrow-minded they can't see their own arguments are the same.
